Shawn Mendes has been forced to deal with two very different rumors over the past several months:
1. He’s gay.
2. He’s madly in love with Hailey Baldwin.
In the latest issue of Rolling Stone, Mendes touches on both of these seemingly antithetical topics, beginning with his date for the MET Gala in May.
It’s true: Mendes was actually Baldwin’s date for this gigantic event in The Big Apple, which was only held seven months ago.
He and Baldwin were a romantic item at the time, only for Hailey to turn around and get engaged to Justin Bieber just a few weeks later.
What the heck, right?!?
The 20-year old singer has to be very mad and awfully bitter, doesn’t he? Seeing as he admits to Rolling Stone that he and Baldwin were more than mere friends?
“I don’t even wanna put a title on it. I think it was more of a zone of limbo,” Mendes says of his relationship with Baldwin.
In other words: The two were banging!
This summer, not long after Baldwin got back together with Bieber, she deleted all traces of Mendes from her social media accounts.
Because Bieber was jealous and asked her to do so?
We can’t say for certain, but Mendes claims not to harbor any ill will either way.
“I get it, you know. I texted Hailey, ‘Congratulations,’ and I really am happy for them,” Mendes tells Rolling Stone of the newlyweds, adding of Baldwin:
“She’s still one of the f-cking coolest people ever — she’s not just a beautiful person visually, but she’s one of the most beautiful hearts I’ve ever met.”
It sounds like Mendes has moved on, but the cover story on the artist notes how Mendes appears to want to say more on the matter, prior to adding:
“I think I’m an idiot to not, you know…But you can’t control your heart.”
While opening up about his ex-girlfriend, Mendes also gets candid in this magazine discussion about all the folks out there who think he has ex-boyfriends.
That is, all the folks out there who think he’s gay.
The rumors have given him anxiety.
“In the back of my heart, I feel like I need to go be seen with someone – like a girl – in public, to prove to people that I’m not gay,” Mendes says, explaining:
“Even though in my heart I know that it’s not a bad thing. There’s still a piece of me that thinks that. And I hate that side of me.”
The singer cites a photo his friend, Taylor Swift, shared of him wearing sparkly eye shadow, saying that he woke up in a panic after giving her permission to share the snapshot.
“I felt sick. I was like, ‘F-ck, why did let her post that? I just fed the fire that I’m terrified of.”
Gotta admire his honesty here, right?
The thing is, Mendes realizes that this really isn’t a big deal for him.
What WOULD be a big deal would be if he actually were gay…
Addressing the trolls, he says:
“I thought, ‘You f-cking guys are so lucky I’m not actually gay and terrified of coming out.’ That’s something that kills people.
“That’s how sensitive it is. Do you like the songs? Do you like me? Who cares if I’m gay?”
After the release of the interview on Monday, Mendes jumped on Twitter to express his slight disappointment for how he came across in the piece:
“Of course I have my insecurities and struggles but that’s just one part of me. Sometimes the positive side of a story doesn’t always get fully told and I wish it had here.
“I love what i do and I love you guys so much.”
